Wish you all a very happy Maatu pongal.
The third day of Pongal is called Mattu Pongal where Lord Ganesha and Parvati are worshipped and Pongal is offered to them. The word mattu means bull and on this day, cattle are bathed, their horns are painted and covered with shining metal caps. They are also decorated with flower garlands and bells. On this day we keep Kanu Pidi. Kanu Pidi is a tradition observed on Mattu Pongal by women and young girls. They place a leaf of turmeric plant outside their home, and feed the leftover pongal dish and food from Surya Pongal to the birds, particularly crow. They pray for their brothers' well being, in a manner similar to Bhaiya dooj in north India.
Both my mother's and my in-laws follow this tradition. It is very interesting to watch my evolution and thought process following this tradition as a child, teenager, adult, married woman, mother, mother-in-law and grand mother.
The following purpose as I understood is embedded very clear and strong in my mind
"Pray for my brother's well-being"…
