I do that. In fact one of the things that I also say to my close friend or relatives is

"This is the situation. All I need from you is to keep us in prayers and I mean it. This makes me feel that they are there with my current challenging situation in the way they want to be ( physically or mentally or emotionally or whatever prayer means to them)
