I think it all depends on why each person is writing, is it to communicate their message to the world or to just pour out their thoughts and feelings or to make money or to promote their services and products.
Personally I am not paying attention to the followers count.
Currently for me:
1. It is important to allot certain time to read and participate.
2. To write as per my calling each day. Some days i am clear about the content and some days and some days I am clear about which publication to send to
3. Learning about My evolution through the process of writing for Medium seems to be my big ",Why" at this time
